Bluestone Lane, New York
During a recent visit to New York with my friend Sophie we visited Bluestone Lane Collective Cafe on Greenwich Avenue for some brunch. It was recommended to me by one of my followers on Instagram because of the selection of healthy food.
The venue had a busy but laid-back, friendly atmosphere when we walked in. The blue and white decor, cushions and light furniture makes you feel like you’re sitting in a beach front cafe, which makes sense as the restaurant was started by Melbourne-based restauranteur Sappho Hatzis.
Sophie needed her coffee immediately on arrival so we both ordered a cup. Wow, was it strong coffee and certainly perked us up for our walk around New York. I think this would pass the test for a discerning coffee connoisseur.
The menu offers things like Coconut Quinoa Porridge, Lemon Gluten-free Banana Bread and Green Baked Eggs. There are plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.
I started by trying some of the different dishes as the staff kindly allowed me to have a taster session. I tried the Collective Granola which is made in-house with oats, coconut chips, seeds, nuts, blood orange curd and raspberries. There is the options of having Greek yoghurt with your granola. I really liked this and wish I had ordered it as my main dish. It was light, crunchy and wasn’t too sweet. Just perfect!
I also tried the Coconut Quinoa Porridge which they served with cashew cream, strawberry compote, topped with sunflower seeds, slice almonds and fresh raspberries and blueberries. This was also delicious. Sorry I didn’t take photos of my tester dishes.
As my main brunch meal I had the Green Baked Eggs with chimichurri, cherry tomatoes, spinach, portobellow mushrooms and feta served on a hot skillet with Balthazar toast. It was a lovely mess of flavours and the mushrooms finished it off just right. The Balthazar toast is made fresh and they have gluten-free options as well. The bread in America, bizarrely but not unexpectedly, has a lot of sugar in it, whereas the Balthazar bread is made authentically without any nasty ingredients.
Sophie had the avocado smash on Balthazar toast with tahini, heirloom cherry tomatoes, feta, sunflower sprouts and poached egg.
All in all a delightful experience. I left feeling full and satisfied. If I lived in New York I would certainly go back and if I ever go to Melbourne I’ll definitely seek out a Bluestone Cafe.
